Dive Into Advanced – Android is renowned for its advanced operating system, featuring built-in protections ranging from app installation security to everyday app functionalities such as Messages and dialer, particularly on Pixel devices. One of the standout features in Google Messages is spam detection, designed to shield users from unwanted or potentially harmful SMS messages.
Recently, Google updated its documentation, revealing that AI plays a significant role in this process.
According to Android Police (September 3, 2024), Google Messages now automatically activates spam protection. If you receive a message from a suspicious sender, you will be notified.
This feature aims to prevent spam messages from reaching your inbox by directly routing unencrypted communications to the Spam folder within the app.
It helps to differentiate between scam messages and genuine ones. Previously, this feature’s documentation was titled “Your chats stay private with spam detection,” but it has now been updated to “How Google protects your privacy with spam detection.”
While it’s not entirely clear if the functionality of this feature has changed, the new documentation offers a more detailed explanation of AI’s role.
Google employs machine learning on devices to identify patterns in messages and detect spam. Additionally, they now examine URLs in incoming messages; these URLs are uploaded to Google to ensure they are not harmful.
Furthermore, there is additional information on how spam detection processes suspicious text and how “signals” from such text can be used to enhance the AI’s spam detection capabilities.
This is because the training data you provide helps with spam protection, especially when processing on-device is not feasible.
Interestingly, Google also notes that only unencrypted messages are used to train the AI for spam filtering. Thus, all encrypted chats, including RCS messages, are only scanned by machine learning on the device for potential spam.
Additionally, Google has added the capability to report spam messages not only to Google but also to your cellular provider. This makes spam filtering more effective, especially for region-specific or carrier-specific scams.
Although there is no official statement on whether the functionality of spam protection has changed, it should become effective immediately. Clearly, Google is becoming more transparent about the role of AI in this feature, which is a positive development!

Previously, Google launched background wallpapers for RCS chats in Google Messages. According to 9To5Google, this new wallpaper feature will help users distinguish Google’s messaging app from SMS or MMS conversations.
The wallpaper for RCS chats in Google Messages features a design with overlapping circles that stand out when the smartphone applies a lighter theme.
Currently, there is no option to change the wallpaper design or disable this feature. It is likely still in the testing phase as there has been no official announcement from the company. Business Standard reported on January 1, 2024.
Google is also expected to add an option to synchronize the background with the conversation recipient.
Previously, it was reported that Google is working on a new feature allowing users to edit sent messages.
Google has also added some indicators for this new feature in the latest beta version of the app. The leak shows a new UI for editing sent messages and tracking message edit history from the database.
As of now, this feature is still in development and is expected to be widely released to Google Messages users in the coming months.
