According to a statement from XL Axiata on Sunday (September 15, 2024), the trial for prepaid SIM registration using facial recognition technology was conducted under the direct supervision of Sumini, Chairperson of the Monitoring & Evaluation Team for Telecommunications Services and Customer Protection at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo).
The event was also attended by Wayan Toni Supriyanto. Director General of the Postal and Informatics Services at Kominfo; Yessie D. Yosetya, Director & Chief Enterprise Business and Corporate Affairs Officer at XL Axiata; and Rico Usthavia Frans, Director & Chief IT Digital Officer at XL Axiata.

During the prepaid SIM registration process using biometric technology. XL Axiata customers will be asked to scan their faces using the available devices. The collected biometric data will be automatically validated against government population records.
The purpose of this process is to confirm that the registering customer is the legitimate owner of the identity. Facial recognition technology also allows for more accurate identity verification and speeds up the prepaid SIM registration process.
Additionally, this process aligns with the Know Your Customer (KYC) standards implemented in the industry to ensure customer data validity and minimize the risk of fraud or identity misuse.
